Portugal Film Locations | Locationow

Portugal has become one of Southern Europe’s most versatile destinations for international productions looking for distinctive film locations. From the Atlantic coastline and dramatic cliffs to historic architecture, contemporary villas, rural estates and modern urban environments, the country offers an impressive variety of locations within a relatively compact territory.

For productions searching for film locations in Portugal, this diversity is one of the country’s greatest advantages. Portugal can provide very different visual identities within the same production journey, making it an increasingly attractive destination for feature films, television, advertising, fashion, branded content and international photo productions.

A diverse landscape for location scouting

Portugal’s Atlantic coastline offers beaches, dunes, cliffs and rugged landscapes, while inland regions introduce mountains, forests, vineyards, countryside and traditional villages.

The country also has a rich architectural heritage. Historic palaces, estates, old town centres and traditional buildings coexist with contemporary architecture, modern villas, private houses and distinctive hospitality spaces.

For an international production, this combination creates a highly flexible location environment. A production may move from an Atlantic landscape to a historic setting, a modern villa or an urban environment without the logistical complexity of changing countries.

Villas, private houses and contemporary architecture

Portugal is particularly interesting for productions looking for villa locations and contemporary houses. Modern architecture, swimming pools, landscaped gardens, minimalist interiors and properties overlooking the Atlantic provide versatile environments for commercials, feature films, television, fashion and branded content.

Private properties can also offer a level of control and flexibility that is particularly valuable to productions, allowing the location to be adapted to the visual and technical requirements of a shoot.

From sophisticated coastal villas to traditional estates and rural properties, Portugal offers a wide range of private locations with very different architectural identities.

Historic, urban and natural film locations

The visual possibilities extend far beyond private properties.

Lisbon and Porto provide historic streets, distinctive façades, traditional architecture and contemporary urban environments, while other parts of the country offer palaces, monasteries, estates, villages and rural landscapes.

For productions looking for European film locations, Portugal can therefore offer a broad spectrum of settings: Atlantic environments, Mediterranean-inspired landscapes, historic architecture, sophisticated urban locations and remote countryside.

This visual diversity is one of the reasons Portugal continues to attract international productions looking for locations that can stand in for different places while remaining within a manageable production territory.

Film incentives in Portugal: up to 40% in eligible territories

Location is only one part of the decision when choosing a filming destination. Portugal also offers a competitive financial framework for audiovisual productions through SCRI.PT and the RIPAC – Regime de Incentivos à Produção Audiovisual e Cinematográfica, administered by the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual (ICA).

Under the current 2026 framework, eligible medium-budget productions can receive a 30% reimbursement of eligible expenditure in Portugal, with the rate increasing to 40% for eligible expenditure carried out in low-density territories and autonomous regions, subject to the programme’s eligibility requirements.

The scheme applies to eligible film and audiovisual productions and is designed to strengthen Portugal’s competitiveness as a destination for national and international projects. For larger productions meeting the applicable expenditure threshold, a separate incentive is available, with its own reimbursement structure.

The current programme also includes support for location scouting and production scouting missions by foreign producers, helping international teams assess Portugal as a potential filming destination before committing to production.

For international producers, this combination of film locations, financial incentives and local production expertisemakes Portugal an increasingly interesting option when comparing filming destinations across Southern Europe.
